    Abstract

This paper examines the effect of related search term stimuli on concept generation using talk-aloud protocol. Through the previous experiments, it was concluded that the related search terms were effective in enhancing design creativity, and creative cognitive processes were related to the creativity of final outputs in related search term stimuli condition. It means that related search terms simulate the designer to use creative cognitive processes. But it is difficult to know how related search terms simulate creative cognitive processes. To analyze internal cognitive processes, talk aloud protocol would be used in this paper. Geneplore model, six generative cognitive processes and six exploratory cognitive processes were used for coding scheme for protocol analysis. Through the protocol analysis of 5 cases, patterns were found out in the mapped formalism. The patterns between related search terms and twelve generative and exploratory cognitive processes were examined. It was concluded that the related search terms stimulated to associate with other words and helped to start creative cognitive processes. It means that related search terms stimulate to use association, and association stimulates to use other creative cognitive processes like mental transformation and mental syntheses.
